Presentation Overview:

Technological advancements geared towards solving today’s environmental issues have increased the options for decarbonizing existing buildings. Knowing where to start, how to evaluate these options, and where to divert capital assets can be overwhelming. Equipment and intelligent controls systems are required to address the current challenges we face. This discussion will cover ways to use equipment and control systems to address our emissions challenges, as well as how controls systems can be used to automate emissions reporting for owners.

Presenter Bios:

Mark LaFrance, Principal, HTS New England

Mark LaFrance is a Principal at HTS New England, overseeing business operations and leading the HTS Engineering group that provides equipment design support for Consulting Engineers. Mark’s passion for Engineering led him to pursue and obtain a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire, which led him to his first industry role as a Design Engineer and Test Engineer in the renewable energy industry. Mark joined HTS in 2012 where he worked with Engineers, Contractors, and Owners seeing the complete cycle of HVAC equipment application from design to operation. Mark enjoys exploring and qualifying new equipment technologies to bring to the market through HTS. He brings strong attention to detail, upbeat energy, new ideas, and big picture goals to his role as an HTS New England Principal.

Rick Stehmeyer, Control Technologies Inc.

Rick Stehmeyer is an expert in building system controls programming and has experience with every major control product in the market.  Early in his career (2004-2010) Stehmeyer lived in New York City and developed his skillset in systems integration and energy management for customers like Trump Tower (1 Central Park West), Verizon Wireless and Cold Spring Harbor Labs.  Using his experience working his way up from intern to manager of the software department, Rick has the keen ability to find ways to optimize building systems for increased efficiency through controls programming.  His work found over $29k in annual electric savings (confirmed via M&V) at Jay Peak in 2016 by integrating their hotel booking system with their heat pumps to automatically setback un-booked guest rooms in a 176 room 6-story hotel in northern Vermont.  His skill set allowed the further optimization of the energy efficiency of controls systems across Vermont and Maine during his time as a commissioning agent working for Cx Associates in Burlington Vermont (2014 through 2020).

Mr. Stehmeyer returned to Control Technologies Inc (CTI) in 2020 as the manager of the Vermont Software team.  He was then promoted to Corporate Strategist where he uses his experience and focus on energy efficiency to help CTI develop new products and strategies to keep CTI’s business evolving with the needs of the market as its changed by technology advancements and climate.
